The BPA plasma concentrations of patients on maintenance hemodialysis is on average six times higher than the one in patients with CKD stage 5.1
ESRD patients on hemodialysis are repeatedly exposed to BPA from components of the dialyzers, more specifically polycarbonate housings and some dialysis membranes, resulting in a higher BPA blood levels than healthy subjects.
Some recent studies on the chronic use of BPA-free dialyzers indicate decrease of BPA serum levels in dialyzed patients reflecting a potential beneficial effect on inflammation and oxidative stress.2
